Acer palmatum 'St. Therese' ('The Little Flower')
Rare Dwarf Japanese Maple Tree
Zones 5–9
Acer palmatum 'St. Therese', also known as 'The Little Flower', is a rare dwarf Japanese maple discovered by our good friend Bob McCaffrey. Originating from what is commonly known as a witches' broom, Bob affectionately refers to these unique mutations as "blessings," recognizing their ability to produce extraordinary compact forms that are highly prized by collectors.
This beautiful selection forms a dense, compact mound of rich red foliage that provides outstanding color throughout the growing season. Its naturally tight branching and slow growth create a refined, miniature appearance, making 'St. Therese' an exceptional choice for containers, rock gardens, fairy gardens, and bonsai. The deep red foliage offers excellent contrast in the landscape and typically develops vibrant shades of crimson and scarlet in autumn.
With its compact growth habit, 'St. Therese' is ideal for gardeners with limited space who still want the elegance and beauty of a Japanese maple. Its dense branching also makes it an excellent specimen for collectors seeking unusual dwarf cultivars.
For best results, plant 'St. Therese' in well-drained soil with morning sun or filtered afternoon light, especially in warmer climates. Once established, this hardy cultivar is easy to maintain and rewards gardeners with year-round structure and outstanding seasonal color.
Rarely available and full of character, Acer palmatum 'St. Therese' ('The Little Flower') is a true collector's Japanese maple whose compact size, rich red foliage, and unique origin make it a treasured addition to any garden or bonsai collection.
